This and That - Life Lately

In a mostly successful attempt to be less attached to my cell phone I haven't been taking many pictures of life lately. Here's a run down of life the last couple of weeks!

Memorial Day weekend should have been dubbed the weekend of cakes! Both my Uncle and my Mother-in-law have birthdays on the 26th. We celebrated John's mom's birthday on Friday with Italian food and a Red Velvet bundt cake with delicious cream cheese frosting.

Saturday we spent a good chunk of the day celebrating one of my cousins graduation from High School. He will be joining the Army at the end of the summer. We are so proud of him!

Sunday was church and I was taking the girls solo because John was with my Great Uncle B and another Uncle for the Dean and Deluca golf tournament at the Colonial. For some dumb reason I had volunteered to bring breakfast for the girls teachers knowing I'd be solo-parenting that day and the morning went about as poorly as you'd imagine. I finally dropped the girls off with cinnamon rolls that had clearly been iced while too hot 30 minutes after services started.

Monday we celebrated Memorial Day with my Dad's family. The girls loved swimming with their cousins. Cora is still afraid of the water some, but if her cousin pulls her around in the water it's fine but Mommy isn't trustworthy apparently lol

I stayed up late Sunday night making my uncle a birthday cake/Memorial Day cake. I ran out of powdered sugar for white icing (thanks to the little helpers having dumped a few cups of sugar onto the floor) so rather than driving the 30 minutes to the store very late at night I whipped some up in the food processor. It was a little gritty but not bad!

My Dad and Uncle continue the tradition their father started of buying a T-Bone steak for my uncle Ted for his birthday. They take it a little further than Granda had though... this steak was 2 inches thick and 38 ounces! It took some research just to know how to grill it!

We've been making a point of going to the splash pad in town at least once a week! The girls are so tired and rest so well afterward, mommy loves it! It makes for a great mommy play date as we chat watching the kids (also super nice that they can't drown in the water) from the shaded pavilions. Sometimes I'll go without a scheduled play date and I sit back enjoying my books with Audible narration or pod casts.

This past Saturday I co-hosted a shower for a dear friend! So excited for them and their sweet baby boy!

We're rapidly approaching vacation and life will likely be pretty busy when we return so I'm enjoying the leisurely pace of summer for the time being! I'm off to the kitchen to make a few dozen breakfast burritos!

Living the Journey: Cancelling Hawaii

A picture of Iao Valley in Maui from the Bestie's recent trip to Hawaii

So, we've cancelled our trip to Hawaii for this October.

As I've mentioned before, we were booked to visit Hawaii, Maui more specifically, the last week of September into the first week of October. This trip was a wedding gift to John and I from his grandparents as a kind of second honeymoon. We've known that we would go on this trip this fall for almost 3 years now.

I have been so excited about the adventurers, sandy beaches, beautiful waters and well heck - everything, because after all it's Hawaii.

but the reason we're not going is way better than what some old island can offer us!

3 weeks after we were booked to be in Hawaii - we will be welcoming our first child into the world!!

How are you Living Your Journey this week??
I hope you'll join us!

Living the Journey: A Servants Heart

Recently, our pastor has been going through a sermon series on Spiritual Gifts and accepting the talents that God gives us.

My parents made it a huge priority in life that their children serve the Lord and serve the Church.
Using their talents, they taught us how to use our talents in our service.

When we were young they were simple projects, my mom taught us how to pull music for the orchestra to help our music minister out.
(Mom is where we got our music talent from)

In middle school I kept up with the music and folders for the youth choir and started preparing the slides to go along with music in church.

Over the years I remember multiple projects preparing video feeds for large funerals with expected overflow. (Dad is quite the techie)

My Mom taught children's handbells and children's choir, my Dad ran sound and video - each of their jobs involved overflow that incorporated the whole family.

Little projects have changed and evolved over the years into larger projects.
For our church's Christmas production, my father and brothers (and some from me) put in hundreds of man hours preparing special lighting, tech and sets.

The middle brother spent several years on church staff using the talents he learned from Dad and his natural, God-given talents serving the church as the Media and Technology Minister.

Today the service goes on in many ways - it leads me to wonder if serving is my Spiritual Gift or something I've learned over my life.
I believe God has blessed me with other Spiritual Gifts, but I think Service is my primary one - not because it was something I was taught and reared in as a child, but because it is where my heart lies.
When I see a project or hear of a need - I want nothing more than to fill that need.

Do you know what your Spiritual Gift is?

Living the Journey - This Week

Life isn't all about the major moments and that can be hard to remember.

When we have a major life crisis, or even something as simple as a stressful deadline - all of our focuses tend to direct to that looming matter.

This week though I have more than enough big stuff on my plate, I've made an effort to notice the little things that make me happy and highlight how I'm Living my Journey.

  • - I've had a short lived love affair with Campbell's Chicken Noodle soup! For several days it has been all I am interested in eating.
  • Watching my hubby play softball with a bunch of overgrown children his co-workers.
  • Several days in the last week I've driven by the square in Denton, every time I go by it seems there is this one lady and she is always walking her Standard Size Poodle as she runs her errands! It makes me smile every time I see her! I now fondly refer to her as "the Poodle Lady".
  • Watching my children's choir get really excited and dance around to a new song!

  • Suddenly deciding that life cannot go on if I don't go down the street and get fried chicken and mashed potatoes! Yum, Yum!!
  • Helping my Dad & brother with projects for our church.
  • Paying off a credit card!!

Living the Journey {fears}

Do you have an irrational fear? Or maybe it isn't irrational, you know exactly why you're afraid of that particular something.

I have my fair share.
I hate flying! It is such a trust - to put your life entirely into someones care and to be utterly helpless and defenseless. (Oh, and if you share this fear, don't put yourself through watching Flight, trust me!)

I'm not exactly the most relaxed during storms. There is just something about the unknown. And hello, "Act of God" there is a reason insurance companies call it that - it is beyond our control!

Doctors. Something about going to the doctor makes me so uneasy. Even for a routine check up. I go out of my way to make sure that I am the most comfortable I can be when I visit the doctor. I research the practice, the physician, what the visit is for and what to expect. I usually read up on this two or three times before I make it to the office.

Today I had a doctors appointment, we're starting the work on doing some genetic testing to see if I am a carrier for Cystic Fibrosis.  Something that I don't usually talk about is the fact that my little brother has CF.
This is a visit that we've known for a while will be necessary for our peace of mind. It's the responsible thing to do.

As I was visiting with the doctor a multitude of things came up, throughout our conversation (it was a long visit) we discussed my faith. Later in the conversation she made a passing comment that I seemed very well educated on matters pertaining to this visit. I thanked her because it was obviously meant to be a compliment, but it got me to thinking. I wish I could blame my excessive and thorough knowledge simply on my familiarity with the disease because it is in our family. The truth is I know so much because I trust so little.

I don't trust the pilots - I don't have a personal relationship with them.
I don't trust the weather - I can't control it.
Doctors make me nervous - because they can bear bad news.
In short, I don't trust the unknown.

It's really a complete contradiction if you know me in real life.
For as much as I don't trust these things, I am beyond trusting of people I meet and those I know and love.

I know that I need to work on my trust issues.
There isn't anything wrong with being prepared - but some things will always be an unknown factor.

My prayer tonight -

Psalm 20:7
Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God.

I can see that chariot, and I can see the horse. I can visualize them and have a trusting relationship with that horse. I need to remember that the ultimate trustworthy individual is God - nothing is out of control.

Bad pilots, horrible storms, unplanned diagnosis.
They're all in His plans.

Living the Journey {3} Busy Times

As bloggers we're so accustomed to sharing content:
Real life happens, we take pictures, draft it, edit it, post it.

I saw this as I was perusing Pinterest a while ago - I thought it was so funny!

haha

Have you ever had a time when real life is happening, or better yet - it's happening and consuming all of your life? There is plenty to write about but it just isn't the appropriate time to write about it? That is where I am right now.

The timing is off. Maybe I worry about it too much - I only have one "in real life" friend who reads my blog with regularity. There's just something so real and final about putting something out there for everyone to see.  Sometimes things just need to stay private amongst family.

I can't wait until the timing is right and I can just talk about what is going on.
In the mean time, I figure it's just another chapter in life.

I hope you'll join us for Living the Journey!
It's all really simple! You just link up a post about what is going on in your life - or how you're Living the Journey (so anything will work, really!) and grab a button!!

Living the Journey {2}

This week has been a whirlwind of craziness!
I'm officially working full time all the time - before I worked about 3/4 of the time and then during busy seasons at work I worked full time & then some.
Silly, I know, but working full time can be exhausting!!

With all the craziness of being this busy it really makes me appreciate the smaller things in life.

Like sweet tea...

Living The Journey {1 The little things}

Good morning!! I'm so excited to be hosting our first link up with Lauren!!

Sometimes in life when things are stressful it always seems to be the little things piling up that make life crazy.

- Like how many more days will we have fog?!? It adds 10 minutes to my drive!
- Going full time at work!! Exciting (and I guess that's more of a big thing...) but then I realize all the things I have been putting off doing in the 2 hours in the morning I don't work and now I don't know when I'll do them.

Sometimes it's hard to look at the big picture. But today I'm trying to remind myself to keep my eye on not the little things that can bog down joy, but on the big things that matter in the long run!

I hope you'll join Lauren and I today & every Wednesday!!

The rules are simple:
Follow Lauren and I.
Grab a button & post it in your post or on your sidebar
Write a post & link up! We want everyone to be able to participate, so any post is great!!
